Our 20 year old son…
Our super bright, kind and humorous 20 year old son with a complex ASD diagnosis and limiting OCDs came to WSL two years ago.
He was feeling pretty desperate, and extremely depressed and unsupported after failing to receive any meaningful college support to achieve “qualifications”. The college staff just clicked with him immediately over a cup of tea and a good chat, and he has since defied all expectations at WSL, aceing his GCSEs last year, and ploughing through A Levels and a BTEC this year. Their empathetic, human and individualised approach has changed our son from feeling depressed and frustrated daily to realising he has value and ability. We cannot thank everyone at WSL enough, they have literally changed his life for the better and we can even dare to hope for a university place in the future.
A wonderful educational facility, with a light touch and lovely teaching staff that supports both the student and the family equally.
Our daughter has settled well…
Our daughter, who has a CAMHS diagnosis, started to attend Work Skills Learning after difficulties in mainstream education.
Work Skills Learning worked effectively with our daughter and have increased her confidence and self esteem and enabled her to reengage with her learning. She has made great progress in attendance and learning since joining Work Skills Learning (WSL) and has received a great level of support and one to one engagement. Staff at WSL understands her level of need and are very responsive.
Our daughter has settled well at WSL and has developed reciprocal supportive relationships with staff and students. The teachers and support staff understand her needs and have been very adaptive to her high levels of anxiety. She feels able to trust the staff at WSL, which is an amazing experience for her given previous lack of support in mainstream education provision. Her confidence and self-esteem have grown, and she is beginning to take an active part in her education and goals setting. WSL is the right setting for her to start to work towards her goals.
I find staff friendly and approachable, and they keep us updated with our daughter’s progress. WSL works well with the family and young person.
Comment from our daughter:
I started to attend Work Skills Learning in September 2020. I like WSL and think that it is the right place for me to work towards my goals in education. The team and other pupils have been very supportive. Working with key teachers and mentor has been helpful in building my confidence and self-esteem.

Our daughter looks forward to…
My daughter started attending Work Skills Learning in early September 2020 and since joining the school has completely change her whole prospective and outlook on schools.
She openly enjoys and looks forward to attending her lessons daily. The school staff and teachers have consistently made students feel welcome and recognise and respect pupils needs of quiet time or when they are feeling down or want to be left alone. They constantly demonstrate a strong acknowledgment in pupils potential and aid students in achieving and exceeding not only in subjects but most importantly in life. Students are encouraged to look beyond and to think about the future in a tolerable and manageable manner. It is fundamental to ensure a child’s safety in a school environment and I’m confident to say that Work Skills Learning understands and has achieved that.
Teachers and school staff are exceptionally supportive and comprehensive toward difficulties expressed in a child or pupil’s life. They are very professional in their approach, for instance they look after the welfare of students, meet their needs, give out helpful advice and coping mechanisms.
