INTENT

At Work Skills Learning, our Science curriculum recognises that students join us from a wide range of educational settings with differing prior learning experiences. We understand that every learner is unique, and we value and celebrate these differences within our community.

At Key Stage 4, the Science curriculum is designed to build on prior learning and develop students’ knowledge, understanding and application of key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The curriculum aims to equip students with the scientific skills, subject specific vocabulary and practical competencies required to access further education, training or employment. It is structured to provide appropriate challenge and support through clearly defined pathways, ensuring all students can achieve meaningful accreditation and develop confidence as independent learners.

Students follow one of four pathways:

  • AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy
  • AQA GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Triple Science / Separate Sciences)
  • AQA Entry Level Certificate (ELC) Science
  • BTEC Level 1 Applied Science

Implementation

The curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced programme of study that develops substantive knowledge alongside disciplinary skills. Students are explicitly taught subject specific vocabulary and are given regular opportunities to apply their understanding through practical investigations and extended written responses.
Practical work is embedded throughout the curriculum to develop investigative skills, analytical thinking and the ability to draw informed conclusions. Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of each pathway, ensuring appropriate levels of challenge and support. Retrieval practice, formative assessment and exam-style questioning are used to secure knowledge and prepare students for their chosen accreditation route.

Impact

The impact of the KS4 curriculum will be measured by:

  • Progress within the student’s application of skills and use of subject specific vocabulary in relation to Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Students working in an increasingly confident and independent manner.
  • Students making informed decisions/explanations about the science practicals they complete.
  • Student’s sense of achievement through the accreditation process.

Through this curriculum, students leave Work Skills Learning with the scientific understanding, practical skills and confidence needed for everyday life, further study and the workplace.
