INTENT

Our aim is to enable students of all abilities to develop their Spanish language skills to their full potential, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to communicate in a variety of contexts, from Foundation through to Higher level study. We adapt our teaching to meet students’ individual needs and interests, encouraging curiosity towards the Spanish language and the wide range of cultural experiences associated with it.

At Work Skills Learning, we strongly believe that learning a language is a valuable life skill that should be enjoyable, rewarding, and accessible to all learners. Our lessons therefore include engaging and interactive elements designed to promote student interest, confidence, and participation in the subject.

The MFL curriculum is planned to enable all students to develop:

Implementation

At Work Skills Learning, staff work collaboratively to plan and implement a broad and inclusive curriculum, delivering high-quality lessons that reflect the individual needs of students. Lessons are differentiated to support and challenge learners appropriately, ensuring that all students can access the curriculum and make progress.

Resources are carefully selected and designed to support progression and are reviewed and updated regularly. Students’ knowledge and understanding are assessed each half term through both formal and informal methods, including tests and low-stakes knowledge checks. These assessments are used to monitor progress, inform future planning, and identify any gaps in learning that require further support. High-quality feedback is provided both during lessons and following assessments to help students further develop their skills and understanding.

Teaching and learning are sequential and carefully structured to support progression over time. Progression is determined through the development of grammatical understanding, phonics, and the acquisition of high-frequency and useful vocabulary.

The curriculum spans from Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) through to Key Stage 5 (AS and A Levels). The content and skills taught across each key stage are informed by the National Curriculum. We carefully select resources and offer qualifications from a range of awarding bodies, including AQA and Edexcel.

To meet the needs of a diverse range of learners, we also implement the AQA Unit Award Scheme (UAS), enabling students to learn the language through topics linked to their interests and abilities. This approach helps to build confidence within the target language and can provide students with the opportunity to progress towards accredited qualifications.

To further support learning, we make effective use of language learning applications and online resources, which act as strong motivators and help reinforce vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural understanding.

Impact

The impact of our MFL curriculum is that students develop their cultural awareness alongside key language skills in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Students become more confident communicators and gain a broader understanding of the world and different cultures.
Through carefully planned teaching, assessment, and personalised support, students are able to make progress appropriate to their individual starting points and aspirations. Our curriculum encourages curiosity, resilience, and independence while supporting students to achieve qualifications and develop transferable skills that will benefit them in further education, employment, and everyday life.
