INTENT

At Work Skills Learning, our NCFE Creative Craft curriculum in Textiles and Ceramics aims to provide students with opportunities to develop creativity, practical skills, confidence, and self-expression through a range of hands-on craft-based experiences. From Entry Level through to Level 2, students are encouraged to explore materials, techniques, and creative processes while developing independence, resilience, and pride in their work.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of learners with a broad range of abilities and learning styles, providing accessible and engaging opportunities for all students to achieve success. We aim to help students:

• Improve fine motor skills and coordination
• Express ideas, thoughts, and emotions creatively

 We believe creative subjects provide valuable opportunities for communication, emotional expression, and personal development, while also preparing students for future pathways in education, employment, and independent living.

Implementation

At Work Skills Learning, teaching and learning within Textiles and Ceramics are carefully planned to ensure progression from Entry Level to Level 2. Lessons are practical, engaging, and highly differentiated to meet students’ individual needs, interests, and aspirations.

Students work with a variety of materials, tools, and techniques across both subjects. Learning experiences are structured to gradually develop technical skills, creativity, independence, and confidence.

 The curriculum includes opportunities for students to:

• Learn sewing, fabric decoration, pattern-making, glazing, and ceramic construction techniques
• Experiment with colour, texture, shape, and form
• Develop practical making skills using a range of materials and equipment
• Research craftspeople, designers, and cultural themes
• Plan, create, refine, and evaluate final pieces
• Develop sketchbook and portfolio work where appropriate

 Teaching strategies include modelling, step-by-step demonstrations, visual supports, repetition, scaffolding, and personalised guidance to ensure accessibility for all learners. Staff provide ongoing verbal and written feedback to support progress and encourage reflection on creative work.

 Assessment takes place through practical outcomes, portfolios, observations, discussions, and completed projects. Students are encouraged to reflect on their work, identify strengths, and consider areas for improvement.

 The learning environment promotes creativity, independence, collaboration, and resilience while supporting students to take ownership of their ideas and achievements.

Impact

The impact of our NCFE Creative Craft curriculum is that students develop confidence, creativity, and a strong sense of achievement through meaningful practical experiences. Students gain practical craft skills alongside transferable life skills such as communication, organisation, problem-solving, and perseverance.

Students become increasingly confident in expressing themselves creatively and develop pride in their work and personal achievements. Many learners also improve their fine motor skills, concentration, emotional regulation, and ability to work independently or collaboratively.

Through participation in Textiles and Ceramics, students gain recognised qualifications and develop skills that support progression into further education, vocational training, supported internships, employment, or community participation. The curriculum also promotes creativity, wellbeing, and independence, helping students prepare positively for adulthood and future opportunities.
